Garmin Express No Longer Starts In Windows 8

In this article, we are going to discuss the solution to the problem of Garmin Express not working on Windows 8.

Yesterday evening after a short 6km run, I connected my Garmin Forerunner 15 to the laptop under Windows 8.1, the Garmin Express splash screen appears and that's it, no way to start the application. I spend half an hour trying to debug the problem, to no avail. In general, I transfer my training from my station, so I drop the laptop, connect the watch, and the same. What frustration!

I notice that in the list of Windows services, Garmin Core Update Service is in the “Starting” state, so it cannot start completely. Killing the process and starting it does the same thing. I search a little more online; a lot of messages on similar problems exist, but few solutions. Until someone calls into question, the Windows firewall. I stop this one; I start Garmin Core Update Service successfully this time. Finally!

I never came across this concern in about 6 months of using the Forerunner; certainly, that Garmin Express did not like one of the latest Windows updates. Garmin Express update is an important process, but sometimes, updates can result in issues with the application. In any case, this solution worked for me.

To deactivate the Windows 8.1 firewall (temporarily) and be able to launch Garmin Express, here is how to do it:

  1. Launch the Windows Run window with Windows + R key combination
  2. Type services.msc in the field then Ok to open the Windows services window
  3. Locate the Windows Firewall service, right-click it, then Stop
  4. Locate the Garmin Core Update Service in the list, start it by right-clicking and then Start
  5. Restart Windows Firewall
  6. Launch the Garmin Express application

That fixed the problem for me, and so I would like you to try these steps too if you want to get rid of the problem with your Garmin device not being able to work on your Windows 8 computer.
